On time es puntual, a la hora dicha. In time es a tiempo de llegar antes de que sea tarde: in time for the start. No son sinónimos. Llegar on time es cumplir la hora. Llegar in time es llegar con margen, antes de que cierre la puerta o empiece lo que no quieres perder. In the time no es ninguna de las dos: sobra the.
At the weekend es la forma de aula (en inglés americano oirás on the weekend; aquí usamos at). Spend time es emplearlo; waste time es malgastarlo. From time to time es de vez en cuando. At the moment es ahora. In the end es finalmente, después de todo el relato. At the end of es un sitio o un tramo: at the end of the street, at the end of the film. Incorrecto: We arrived in the time. In the end of the street there is a park. Correcto: on time si fue puntualidad; at the end of the street si es el extremo. In the end no lleva of, porque no señala un nombre: cierra la historia.
In the city centre, on the outskirts (las afueras). Close to y far from. Para orientar: go straight on, turn left, turn right. A long way from es lejos, sin necesidad de kilómetros. Incorrecto: I did a travel to the centre. Correcto: I went on a trip o I travelled to the city centre. Trip va con go on.
Salud y ánimo, no un diagnóstico: feel well, feel ill, look worried, stay calm, fall asleep, be in a hurry, be aware of más nombre. Incorrecto: He fell sleep. She is aware the delay. Correcto: fell asleep, aware of the delay.
The meeting takes place on Friday. Attend es asistir, sin to: Many students attend the meeting. No assist to, que calca «asistir a». Hold: The school holds a meeting. El centro organiza; el suceso takes place.
Procesos: set off (ponerse en camino), slow down y speed up, turn into (convertirse), carry out un plan, go on (seguir), find out (enterarse), give up (dejarlo). Adjetivo más nombre: heavy rain, strong wind, a short break, a long delay.
Take place y carry out no se cambian. Went on a trip, held a meeting, o the meeting took place.
Si es puntualidad, on time.
We set off in the morning and we arrived on time. We were also in time for the visit: the door was still open. The museum is in the city centre, a long way from the outskirts. Go straight on and turn left. I was in a hurry, but we didn't waste time. We spent the hour on the map. In the end we found out where to meet. The park is at the end of the street, not in the end of the street. From time to time we stopped, and at the weekend the square is quiet.
Paso 1. Set off es ponerse en camino. On time es la hora dicha. In time for the visit es el margen: la puerta seguía abierta. No son lo mismo, y in the time no sustituye a ninguna.
Paso 2. In the city centre y on the outskirts. A long way from, sin kilómetros. Go straight on, turn left. I was in a hurry es estado. Didn't waste time frente a spent the hour: malgastar o emplear.
Paso 3. In the end cierra el relato: finalmente nos enteramos. At the end of the street es el extremo, y lleva of más nombre. In the end of the street mezcla el cierre del relato con el sitio.
Glosa de las palabras de este ejemplo.
The meeting takes place on Friday. A lot of students attend it. The school holds it in the hall. We carried out the plan. The delay turned into a short break. There was heavy rain and a strong wind. A fire broke out in the story we read, not in the building. The discussion went on. Then one group gave up. We found out where the room was. Nobody did a travel and nobody did a meeting.
Paso 1. El suceso: takes place. Attend sin to. No The meeting takes part, ni students assist to it.
Paso 2. La tarea: carried out the plan. El cambio: turned into a short break.
Paso 3. Break out es estallar. Go on es seguir. Give up es dejarlo. Find out es enterarse. Did a travel y did a meeting se tachan: went on a trip, the meeting took place, o the school held a meeting.
Glosa de las palabras de este ejemplo.
On time y in time comparten time y no comparten sentido.
In the end y at the end of comparten end y no comparten sitio en la frase. In the end no admite of. At the end exige of y un nombre. In the end of the film trataría el final de la película como si fuera el cierre de un relato sin nombre, y at the end, solo, se queda colgado.
Take place no acepta el plan como objeto de la misma manera que carry out. The meeting takes place. We carry out the plan. We take place the meeting no es inglés.

Paso 3. In the end cierra el relato: finalmente nos enteramos. At the end of the street es el extremo, y lleva of más nombre. In the end of the street mezcla el cierre del relato con el sitio.

Tres preguntas. Ábrelas cuando hayas contestado, no antes.
On time es la puntualidad, a la hora dicha. In time es llegar con margen.
Por qué: On time cumple la hora que se había dicho. In time es llegar antes de que sea tarde, in time for the start, aunque no sea el minuto exacto. In the time no es ninguna de las dos: sobra the y no significa ni puntualidad ni margen.
Porque el extremo es at the end of. In the end significa finalmente y no lleva of.
Por qué: In the end cierra un relato: al final, después de todo, y no señala un nombre. At the end of señala una posición o un tramo, y necesita el nombre: of the street, of the film.
Carry out dice que vosotros realizáis algo, y sí lleva objeto: carry out the plan. Did a travel y did a meeting no arreglan ninguna de las dos piezas; went on a trip y the meeting took place sí colocan.
Colocación, no conjugación nueva. On time no es in time, y ninguno es in the time. In the end no lleva of; at the end of sí. Take place es suceder; carry out es realizar. Heavy rain, strong wind, go on a trip.
Una buena idea suele… no usar did a travel, in the time ni in the end of the street, y no convertir el párrafo en un ejercicio de will o de pasado.
