Espacio y relaciones espaciales

1º Bachillerato Inglés I · CyL Decreto 40/2022 · bloque A, Comunicación · lugar, movimiento y la relativa where. Competencia de producir.

Objetivos

  1. Situar con in, on y at, y con under, behind, next to, between, opposite e in front of.
  2. Describir un recorrido con to, into, out of, onto, off, across, along, through, past y towards.
  3. Decir arrive in una ciudad y arrive at un edificio, nunca arrive to.

Si no hay movimiento, eliges in, on o at, y el resto de la posición: under, behind, in front of, next to, between, opposite.

In, on, at

In es interior o dentro de un área: in the classroom, in the museum, in the city centre. On es superficie, y también el transporte público en el que vas montado: on the table, on the bus. At es un punto: at the bus stop, at the door, at school.

Incorrecto: The book is in the table. We are in the bus. She is at the classroom. Correcto: on the table, on the bus, in the classroom. On the bus y at the bus stop no se intercambian: uno es ir ya montado y el otro es el punto de espera, todavía fuera. Into no describe ese lugar quieto.

El resto de la posición

Under, debajo. Behind, detrás. In front of, delante. Next to, al lado. Opposite, enfrente. Estas no dicen movimiento. The bag is under the seat. The stop is next to the museum. The café is opposite the gate. Si estás entre el museo y la parada, between the museum and the stop. Between the museum, solo, se queda cojo.

Movimiento

To marca el destino: go to the square. Into es entrar: go into the museum. Out of es salir. Onto es subirse a una superficie; off, bajarse. Get on the bus y get off the bus son subir y bajar del autobús, no get in the bus. Across cruza un espacio abierto: walk across the square. Along sigue una línea: walk along the street. Past pasa por delante sin entrar: go past the gate.

Arrive no lleva to. Arrive in una ciudad: arrive in Segovia. Arrive at un edificio o un punto: arrive at the station. Incorrecto: We arrived to Segovia.

Where sustituye a in which o at which cuando el sitio ya es el antecedente. This is the square where we meet. Segovia is the city where we took the photo. No añadas otra preposición de lugar al final: the square where we meet in. Y no uses which solo, si la preposición era necesaria: the city which I was born. O where, o which I was born in.

Si no hay movimiento, in / on / at. Arrive in la ciudad, arrive at el edificio, nunca arrive to. Where no se acompaña de un in de más.

Texto trabajado 1 — De la parada al museo

We are at the bus stop in Segovia. The book is on the bench, not in the bench. We are not on the bus yet. The museum is next to the stop and the café is opposite the gate. The bag is under the seat we left behind. When the bus comes, we get on. We get off at the next stop. We go into the museum. We do not go past the gate: we walk through the door.

Paso 1. Quieto: at the bus stop es el punto. On the bench es la superficie. On the bus sería ya ir montados, y el texto dice que todavía no. In the bench sería interior, y el libro está apoyado.

Paso 2. Next to, opposite y under no mueven a nadie.

Paso 3. Movimiento: get on y get off el autobús. Into el museo es entrar. Through the door atraviesa. Past the gate sería de largo, y el texto dice que no. Get in the bus no es el patrón de este autobús.

Glosa de las palabras de este ejemplo.

Texto trabajado 2 — Llegar, recorrer, y where

We arrived in Segovia in the morning and arrived at the station ten minutes later. We walked along the street, across the square, and towards the aqueduct. We did not arrive to the city: that form is not English. This is the square where we meet. Segovia is the city where we took the photo. It is not the square where we meet in, and it is not the city which we meet.

Paso 1. Arrive in Segovia: la ciudad. Arrive at the station: el edificio. Into Segovia con arrive tampoco.

Paso 2.

Paso 3. Where ya significa en el que. The square where we meet no lleva in al final. Which we meet deja el verbo sin sitio. Who we meet sería persona, y una plaza no lo es.

Glosa de las palabras de este ejemplo.

Lo que se calca

«En el autobús» no siempre es in. Si vais montados, on the bus. «Llegar a Segovia» no es arrive to Segovia.

Primero estáis quietos: at the bus stop, el libro on the bench, el museo next to the stop. Nada de eso es movimiento. Cuando el autobús abre la puerta, get on; al bajar, get off. Into the museum es entrar. Along the street sigue la acera. Across the square la cruza. Past the gate sería pasar de largo, y solo vale si no entráis.

Arrive in Segovia y arrive at the station no admiten to. Where we meet ya dice el lugar, así que el in final sobra. Si dudas, señala con el dedo: si el dedo no se mueve, in, on o at; si el dedo recorre, elige la preposición del recorrido y no la del sitio quieto.

Ejemplo 2 — Arrive y where

We arrived in Segovia in the morning and arrived at the station ten minutes later. We walked along the street, across the square, and towards the aqueduct.

Nunca arrive to.

Comprueba

Tres preguntas. Ábrelas cuando hayas contestado, no antes.

¿Por qué on the bus y at the bus stop no se intercambian?

Arrive in Segovia. Arrive at the station.

Cruzarlas, at Segovia e in the station, también falla: cada nombre pide la suya.

¿Qué sobra en the square where we meet in?

El in final.

Mini cierre

Quieto: in, on, at. En movimiento: into, across, along, past, get on y get off. Arrive in la ciudad, arrive at el edificio, nunca arrive to. Where ya lleva el sitio.

Reto

Usa at the bus stop, get on, arrive in, walk along, walk across, go into y una relativa con where.
