Entidad y propiedades

  1. Elegir a, an, the o artículo cero en los casos claros: primera mención, sonido vocálico, segunda mención, general y Spain.
  5. Usar el reflexivo (myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves) y el recíproco each other.
  6. Elegir gerundio o infinitivo: enjoy/avoid + -ing, decide/want + to, y stop + -ing frente a stop + to.

A, an, the, o ninguno

Incorrecto: She gave me a information about the Spain. Information no se cuenta con a. Spain no lleva the. Correcto: She gave me information about Spain. Profesión en singular: She is an engineer, no She is engineer.

A beautiful small old stone bridge. No hace falta llenar todas las casillas. Sí hace falta no invertirlas. Incorrecto: A stone old beautiful bridge. Correcto: a beautiful old stone bridge.

Comparativo y superlativo

Adjetivo corto: -er than y the -est. Old, older than, the oldest. Adjetivo largo: more … than y the most …. More expensive than, the most expensive. Irregulares de esta lección: good, better, the best; bad, worse, the worst; far, farther o further, the farthest o the furthest para la distancia.

Incorrecto: This bridge is more good. That one is the most far. Correcto: This bridge is better. That one is the farthest. No sumes more y -er. No pongas a delante de information.

Reflexivos

Myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves. I hurt myself. Be careful with yourself. He looked at himself. She taught herself the chorus. The door opened by itself. We enjoyed ourselves. Did you enjoy yourselves? (you de varias personas). They introduced themselves.

He looked at himself: él se miró. Incorrecto: He looked at herself, si el sujeto es he.

Each other

Each other es recíproco: A hace la acción a B y B a A. They helped each other. They looked at each other. No es themselves. They looked at themselves: cada uno se miró a sí mismo, por ejemplo en un espejo. They looked at each other: se miraron entre ellos. Incorrecto: They helped each others. Other no lleva s aquí. Incorrecto: They helped themselves each other.

Unos verbos piden -ing. Enjoy y avoid van con gerundio: She enjoys reading. She avoids talking in the library. Incorrecto: She enjoys to read. She avoids to talk.

Decide y want: She decided to leave. She wants to stay. Incorrecto: She decided leaving. She wants staying.

She stopped talking. She stopped to talk. Se paró a hablar. Incorrecto, si el sentido era «dejó de hablar»: She stopped to talk. Incorrecto de forma: She stopped to talking. To no va con -ing.

Error típico de este bloque: I enjoy to read, I decided leaving, y stop to cuando querías decir que la acción se acabó. Enjoy y avoid no aceptan to. Decide y want no aceptan -ing.

Primera mención, a/an. Ya sabemos cuál, the. General, nada. Good no acepta more. El reflexivo vuelve al sujeto; each other cruza entre dos. Enjoy y avoid, -ing. Decide y want, to. Stop -ing cesa; stop to se detiene para.

Texto trabajado 1 — Artículo, orden y comparativo

El paseo es de clase. No hay metros ni fechas que sostener.

We crossed a bridge outside Ávila. It was a beautiful old stone bridge. The bridge is older than the other one on the path. The north path is better when it rains. Spain has many old bridges, and we did not need a information desk: the plaque was enough. This is the farthest stop on our walk, and I need further information about the next gate, not farther information.

Paso 1. Primera mención, singular contable: a bridge. No the bridge, porque el lector aún no sabe cuál. Information no lleva a. Spain no lleva the.

Paso 2. Adjetivos en orden: a beautiful old stone bridge. Opinión, edad, material, nombre. No a stone old beautiful bridge. Segunda mención: the bridge. El comparativo corto es older than, no more old.

Paso 3. Good no lleva more: better.

Texto trabajado 2 — Reflexivo, recíproco, gerundio e infinitivo

Ana and Luis prepared the oral in the library. Ana enjoys reading the notes aloud. Luis avoids rushing. They decided to start with the question. Ana wants to answer first. When the teacher came in, they stopped talking. On the stairs, Ana stopped to talk to Luis. They looked at each other and smiled. Later, in the hall mirror, they looked at themselves. Luis said, I hurt myself with the folder.

Paso 1. Enjoy y avoid llevan -ing: enjoys reading, avoids rushing. Incorrecto: enjoys to read, avoids to rush. Decide y want llevan to: decided to start, wants to answer. Incorrecto: decided starting, wants answering.

Paso 2.

Paso 3. Looked at each other: se miraron entre ellos. Incorrecto: They looked at each others.

Es information o a piece of information.

Comprueba

Tres preguntas.

They helped each other y They helped themselves no dicen lo mismo. ¿Cuál es la diferencia?

Each other es el uno al otro. Themselves es cada uno a sí mismo.

Por qué: Si Ana ayuda a Luis y Luis ayuda a Ana, el recíproco es they helped each other.

¿Stopped talking o stopped to talk?

They stopped talking.

Mini cierre

A/an presenta, the identifica, el general va en cero.

Reto

Una buena idea suele… no escribir a information, the Spain ni more good, y no inventar metros.
